Political commentary

There is an old English adage to bury a bad news where something bad is already in the air. Last Friday Croatian police has decided to arrest alleged warlord Tomislav Merčep while the whole country was buzzing about the whole affair of ex-Croatian prime minister Ivo Sanader being tracked down somewhere in his “homeland” of Austria. Personally I have a great respect for Sanader. He was the first prime minister of Croatia who has wished his Serb folk Merry Christmas with its traditional saying “The Christ is born”. Croatian Jewish community will remember him for a rather positive commemorative talk at Jasenovac, Second World War concentration camp.
It is pathetic to see Cabinet ministers of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union who are sheepishly getting away from journalists' microphones. There is no way to condone its financial swindling but then again I am certain that during Sanader's time as Croatia's first president Franjo Tuđman's special adviser he witnessed far from few special deals being brokered in favour of the ruling elite.
Money cannot buy the loss of human lives and I wonder for how long the bell will tow for Vladimir Šeks as one of the ruling party henchmen, who has survived affairs Glavaš and now Sanader.
So let us hope that the arrest of warlord criminal Tomislav Merčep is not just burying of the bad news but a light at the end of the tunnel what is left of Croatian democracy.
